The New Hall School Under 12 team won the Mid-Essex rugby festival at a blustery and damp Chelmer Valley High School on Thursday 31st January. In their group games they overcame opposition from Sandon High School, Shenfield High School, Boswells and Moulsham School, while they were held to a draw by Brentwood County High School. In terrible conditions, where the wind chill factor was at freezing they maintained a positive approach to playing open rugby. This allowed them to top their group and qualify for a semi-final against William De Ferrers School. In this semi-final the Griffins opened up and played some of the best rugby of the tournament to comfortably win by six tries to none. The final pitted the team against one of the strongest rugby playing schools in Essex, Coopers’ Company and Coburn. New Hall dominated the match in difficult conditions but struggled to finish phases of play with the tries that were looking likely. Coopers’ defence was strong but the New Hall pressure eventually told when Darius Roohi stormed through to score the winning try. This has been a very positive start for the Year 7 group, and this victory is well deserved following a lot of practice over the last few weeks at lunchtimes and after school.
Try scorers were: Darius Roohi 11, Luke Pordham 9, Josh Jones 3, Ciaran Moore 3, Tom Loomes 2, Alex Wood 1, Bradley Appleton 1, Sam Odell 1
The Mid Essex Champions for 2008 are New Hall School; Tom Loomes, Oliver Osgood, Casey Morgan, Darius Roohi, Conor McCaffrey, Josh Jones, Ciaran Moore, Miles Fletcher, Luke Pordham, Sam Odell, Alex Wood, Edward Fenton, Bradley Appleton, Louis Poynter, Hugo Franklin
