Development Programme News

8th Nov 2008

In accordance with New Hall School’s Development Programme, we have appointed Cadman Construction of Colchester, to construct our next 2 projects for 12 new Classrooms and Sports Changing Rooms, following Planning Approval in July this year.

The New Classroom Block

The Classrooms will be in a 3 storey red brick with clay-tiled roof, traditional styled building within the original grounds of New Hall. Due to its Grade 1 listing and sensitive location, award winning Architects, Tew & Smith, spent nearly a year liaising with the Planning Department to produce a design large enough to accommodate 12 Nos. Classrooms, 2 Seminar Rooms, Staff Offices and daytime facilities for the Boys Upper School, yet remain sensitively subservient to the historical context of the grounds and satisfy English Heritage.

In order to satisfy the Schools commitment of embracing new technology, ecology and sustainability with cost effective solutions, the project is to obtain a minimum BREEAM rating of 55 points. This will be a particularly challenging achievement, due to the restrictions imposed by the Planners and time restraints available for the building to be opened for September 2009.

The new Changing Rooms & Fitness Suite

The Sports Changing Rooms will by contrast be housed in a contemporary cedar clad brick and steel building, facing onto the running track and playing fields. It will provide changing facilities for 120 students and staff in 4 Changing Rooms with a Fitness Centre at first floor level and Staff Office. Designed for maximum flexibility, the Changing Rooms will offer self-contained facilities for ease of use and supervisions and are to be constructed in under 26 weeks, in readiness for the East of England ‘Sevens’ Rugby Tournament on 7 March 2009.
