First co-educational Sixth Form cohort in New Hall’s 366-year history achieves outstanding academic record results:
• Record 47% As
• Record 78% A-B grades
• 81 A Level modules with perfect 100% scores
• Student achieves 6 A Levels at top grades, winning place at Cambridge
The first co-educational Year 13 cohort of students at New Hall School, Chelmsford, are celebrating the school’s best ever A Level results. Principal, Katherine Jeffrey, said: “We are delighted that so many academic records have been broken by the first ever co-educational Sixth Form group in the school’s 366-year history.”
New Hall was one of the first girls’ schools nationally to expand by establishing a Boys’ Division for 11-16 year olds and a large co-educational Sixth Form. The doors of the former girls’ convent school opened to senior boys in 2006 and a fourth and fifth Boarding House have now been successfully established for boys. Katherine Jeffrey said: “From the outset the initiative to take senior boys met with overwhelming support and the school roll reaches 950 this September. The move has enhanced the school in so many ways and now these exceptional A Level results are evidence that the academic performance has continued with its year-on-year improvement”.
• A record 47% of grades were at the top grade A, up from 37% in 2007. Moreover, 12 candidates achieved at least 3, 4 or 5 A grades at A2 Level. One of the first New Hall Sixth Form boys, Donald Lee, achieved 5As and 1B, securing his place at Cambridge University to read Natural Sciences. Head of Sixth Form, Hannah Kiernan, said: “It is a fantastic achievement for one fifth of the Sixth Form to have been awarded at least 3 As at A Level.”

• In a remarkable total of 81 modules, students received a perfect score of 100%: 15 in English, 9 in Mathematics, 6 in each of Physics, Politics, History and Economics; 5 in both Psychology and Photography; 4 in each of Chemistry, Biology and German; 3 in Business Studies; 2 in Religious Studies; and 1 in each of Drama, Classics, Spanish, PE, Polish and Information Communication Technology. Principal, Katherine Jeffrey, said: “These outstanding results of 100% are a testament to the students’ ability and hard work and of course to the expertise and dedication of the teachers.”
• 78% of grades were at the top grades A-B and 94% of grades were at A-C; again, these are records for New Hall students.
• Once again New Hall announced a 100% success rate overall, ensuring that all students achieved the university place of their choice.
INDIVIDUAL SUCCESSES: 12 STUDENTS GAIN 3, 4 OR 5 A GRADES AT A LEVEL
• Donald Lee achieved 6 A Levels at top grades. He was awarded 5As in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Chinese and 1B in Biology, which totals 700 UCAS points. He achieved 6 perfect 100% scores: in 3 Mathematics modules, 2 Further Mathematics modules and a Biology module. He also won a Gold certificate in the UK Maths Challenge. He has won a place at Churchill College, Cambridge to read Natural Sciences.
• Following her A Level success, former New Hall student Amy Carter will be reading History at Clare College, Cambridge.
• Victoria Bibby achieved 4As in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Religious Studies and 1B in Critical Thinking. She achieved 4 perfect 100% scores: in 2 Biology modules, 1 Chemistry module and 1 Religious Studies module. She will be studying Economics, Finance and Biology at McGill University, Canada.
• Lukasz Lipinski achieved 4As in Psychology, Drama, Media Studies and Polish and 1C in AS Level Biology. Lukasz received a commendation from the AQA Examination Board for scoring one of top five marks nationally in Polish out of 388 candidates, having scored 100% in one of the modules. He will be studying Media Arts at Royal Holloway, University of London.
• Danielle Vasili achieved 3As in Physics, Economics and Critical Thinking and 1B in Mathematics, plus 1A in AS Level Psychology. She achieved a perfect 100% score in an Economics module. She also won a Silver certificate in the UK Maths Challenge. She will be studying Accounting and Finance at University of Warwick.
• Shreyaa Vohra achieved 3As in Economics, Mathematics and Religious Studies, plus 1A in AS Level Information Communication Technology and 1B in AS Level Critical Thinking. She will be studying Economics at University of Bath.
• Brian Chan achieved 3As in Mathematics, Business Studies and Chinese and 1B in Information Communication Technology. He achieved a perfect 100% score in a Business Studies module. He will be studying Business Management at the University of Nottingham.
• Michal Anderle achieved 3As in Economics, French and Mathematics and 1A in AS Level Information Communication Technology. Michal achieved a perfect 100% score in 2 Economics modules. Michal also achieved a Merit in the Advanced Extension Award in French. He will be studying Economics at the University College London.
• Elspeth Lewis-Taylor achieved 3As in Drama, Music and Psychology and 1B in AS Level Geography. She achieved a perfect 100% score in a Drama module. She will be studying Psychology at the University of Surrey, having won a scholarship for her A Level results.
• Georgina Read achieved 3As in English, Media Studies and Photography and 1B in AS Level Drama. She will be studying Fashion Communication and Promotion at Nottingham Trent University.
• Rebecca Philbrooks achieved 3As in Classics, English and History, plus 1D in AS Level Mathematics. She will be studying History at the University of East Anglia.
• Adam Harris achieved 3As in Business Studies, Information Communication Technology and Physical Education, and 1B in AS Level History. He will be studying Finance, Accounting and Management at the University of Nottingham.
• Sam Suen achieved 3As in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics and 1B in Chinese. He achieved a perfect 100% score in a Chemistry module. He also won a Gold certificate in the UK Maths Challenge. He will be studying Physics at University College London.
The above individual successes include outstanding results from the first ever New Hall Sixth Form boys. Two Year 11 students achieved an A grade at A Level 2 years early: Amelie Hahne in German and Dan Ni Qi in Chinese.
Head of Sixth Form, Hannah Kiernan, said: “At this time, New Hall is committed to continuing with the provision of A Levels as the qualification of choice. Last year 93% of our students achieved their first choice university place, which is exceptional. We investigated the option of the IB and found it, on balance, too restrictive of the students’ choices of subject combinations. For example, bright New Hall scientists can opt to study Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, as well as a complementary subject such as a language or Critical Thinking. This degree of specialism is not possible with the IB and yet it is desired by some of the best universities in the UK. From 2008, New Hall is also offering the Extended Project as an addition to A Levels, which incorporates the addition skill of detailed research and extended writing to present a thesis. This will be a valuable addition to the New Hall Oxbridge and Gifted and Talented programme.”
OUTSTANDING YEAR 12 AS LEVEL SUCCESSES
Year 12 New Hall students were also celebrating excellent results. The first ever cohort to take the newly introduced Politics A Level achieved 100% A-B grades at AS Level. There were also 100% A-B grades in Latin and Spanish. Vice Principal, Linda Moule, said: “Languages are a particular strength at New Hall and we are delighted that our students have once again bucked the national trend with their successes both in modern languages and in Latin”.
• Sarah Clements, Year 12, is celebrating 14 AS Level module results with straight A grades. Sarah’s results include 3 perfect scores of 100% in two History modules and one Biology module.
• Fred Tan, Year 12, is celebrating 12 AS Level module results with straight A grades. He also won a Gold certificate in the UK Maths Challenge. Fred’s results include 4 perfect scores of 100% in one Chemistry, one Mathematics and two Physics modules.
